The railroad reached Crystal River in 1888. It was known as the Dunnellon Short. A rail depot that was built in Crystal River burned in the early 1900’s. A man named Henry Plant purchased the railroad and it was then known as the Plant System. Once he died, it was then known as the Atlantic Coast Line. The coming of the rail system to Crystal River was a boon to a growing community. Many travelers from many different areas and wealth came to Crystal River for multiple reasons, using the railroad as a means of travel.
