Crystal River is known as the “Hidden Gem Of Florida’s Gulf Coast”. It is located on the western edge of what is now known as Citrus County. This area was much larger, extending out into the Gulf, during the Ice Age. The wild life and marine life were abundant during this time. During this time, many prehistoric animals migrated to this area in search of food. Proof of this was found during the time the Nuclear Power Plant was being built in the late 1960’s. It was believed that “Mound Building Indians” were the first humans to settle in the area around 500 B.C., which can still be seen to this day.
