European explorers landed in the area in the early 1500’s. They were met with resistance by the locals, the “Red men”, called the Timucuan Indians. It has never been said that they ever settled in Crystal River. The Europeans brought with them diseases and the wanton need to kill these “Red Men” so by the early 1700’s, the Timucuan Tribe was extinct.  Other Indian Tribes moved to this area as well. These tribes became known as the Seminole Nation, which they began to attack the local crops and homesteads. This led to the Second Seminole War which lasted around ten years. As said before, this Indian Nation, not known to have settled in Crystal River, had campsites along the Withlacoochee River. The assumption has always been made but no evidence was ever found.
